We’ll be honest, while the Old Abe Trail between Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls is in great condition and has some nice spots, it’s not the most beautiful stretch of trail in the area. It’s mostly a straight trail through the more suburban development areas between the two cities.
Still, it’s a popular stretch of trail and you’ll eventually arrive at Chippewa Falls’ wonderful Riverfront Park alongside the Chippewa River, with access to the charming downtown of the city.
It’s at this point you’d turn back around for a 22-mile round trip.
However, the stretch of trail beyond this after you’re out of the city, on the way to Jim Falls and Cornell, is a very nice wooded experience, following the Chippewa River all the way up to Brunet Island State Park (a 34 mile ride from downtown Eau Claire, making it a 68 mile round trip).
While mileage for these loops and routes are accurate, the time offered is only an estimate. These times reflect a very casual pace of 12mph, assuming the occasional stop or photo opportunity, etc. Of course if you plan to get off your bikes to shop, eat, or sightsee, you’ll need to plan for more time.
Both printed and digital route maps are available when you check in for your rental.

It can be helpful to put in one earbud so you can hear the direction cues, while keeping the other ear open for your surroundings. When following along visually, please be careful and stop before looking too hard at your map.
